Indonesian Shipbrokers Association (ISBA) established by Rheinhard Tobing of PT Puradika Transnusa Utama and other 24 representatives from some 17 companies that offer broking services on Friday 28th June 2002. Mr. Tobing was the 1st chairman, with Asa Samuel of Fearnleys Indonesia taking on the position as vice chairman, Henky Runtunuwu as Secretary and Retno Wattimena as Legal Advisor.
The association was established to aim to improve standards and offer training courses in all aspects of broking.
Shipbroking has been practiced in Indonesia for more than 50 years, after Johs Larsen the first set up a company in Jakarta in the late 1960s.
Months since it was established the association signed agreement with Bimco to act as Bimco’s co-organisers for Bimco Courses in Indonesia. The association had also conducted Tanker Chartering Course with Intertanko.
The association together with other associations had played an active role in the working group in the draft of Presidential Instruction 05/2005, the Shipping Bill 17/2008 to Law 11/2020 concerning job creation and resulted in Government Regulation No. 31/2021 and Minister of Transportation Regulation No. 59/2021 concerning the implementation of Service Business Related to Sea Transportation and No. 12/2021 concerning Business Activity and Product Standards in the Implementation of Risk-Based Business Licensing in the Transportation Sector which also regulates 'Intermediary for Sale and Purchase and/or Ship Charter’.
As Bimco’s co-organiser for Bimco Courses since 2002 the association had conducted courses In Jakarta and Bali till 2011. It was discontinued to due change of training system to online or distance learning. The association had also conducted tanker chartering course in Bogor together with Intertanko. Since then only conducted local trainings till 2019 and continued online during Pandemic Covid-19.
